ACTIVITY NUMBER 1

- Objective:

To study the peristaltic movements in the oesophagus due to which food reaches our stomach from the buccal cavity.

- Materials required:

1. A lump of wet soil
2. A bicycle tire tube
3. A pair of scissors

- Pre-considered facts

Imagine the tube being your oesophagus, the top opening as the ending of your buccal cavity and the lower one as the opening of your stomach with the lump of dirt as a bolus of food.

- Steps

1. First of all, cut the tire tube from any point using the pair of scissors.
2. The circular tube will now become a straight circular pipe.
3. Put the lump of dirt into one of the openings of the tube.
4. Try to move the lump by pressing the part above it while relaxing the part just below it.
5. Doing the same method, you should be able to move the lump from the beginning to the very end.

- Observation/conclusion

The way you were able to move the lump of dirt from the opening or beginning to the end using the pressing and relaxing is the same as what happens when food reaches our stomach from our buccal cavity by peristalsis (contraction and relaxation of muscles) in the oesophagus.

- A section of our oesophagus showing peristalsis.
